Skien Lock was completed in 1861 and was part of the Norsjø-Skien Canal, the oldest part of the Telemark Canal. The two lock systems in the Norsjø-Skien Canal are Skien Lock and Løveid Lock. When this canal was completed, one could sail from the sea all the way to what became the town of Notodden. The canalization was crucial for Norsk Hydro to build the first factory at Notodden in 1905. The canal made it possible to transport raw materials to the factories and finished products from Notodden and out into the world.
In 1861, the locks in Skien were manually operated, and the walls of the lock chamber were made of hewn stone. Since then, Skien Lock has been rebuilt several times into a modern industrial lock with steel gates and smooth lock walls. Hydraulics are now used to open and close the lock gates.
