Discover the very best of Ulefoss and Lake Norsjø on this idyllic, family-friendly cycling tour. This route offers a unique combination of industrial history, medieval culture, outdoor activities, and beautiful rest areas right by the water's edge.
Route Overview:
Length: 8 km (one way)
Duration: Approx. 45 minutes (active cycling time)
Difficulty: Easy / Family-friendly
Starting Point: Øvre Verket, Ulefoss
The journey begins at Øvre Verket, a protected cultural monument featuring red-painted workers' dwellings from the early 19th century. Built for the laborers of the Ulefos Ironworks, these houses represent Norway’s early industrialization. Take a moment to explore this historic area before following the cycling signs out of the village.
Before heading across the bridge, we highly recommend a short detour to the Ulefoss Locks. This is the first lock system travelers encounter when heading from Lake Norsjø toward Dalen by boat. During the summer season, you can watch the majestic canal boats pass through while enjoying a snack at the lock-side café.
Beautifully situated at Romnes stands an authentic medieval stone church built in the late 12th century. It is one of Norway's best-preserved churches of its kind, featuring exquisite Baroque interiors, including a painted pulpit and altarpiece. In summer, the church often hosts cultural events, concerts, and tours.
The route passes directly by Norsjø Golf Park, which boasts one of Norway's most challenging and scenic 18-hole courses. Whether you are a golfer or just passing through, it is an excellent place for a break. The park offers a kiosk, driving range, and a pro-shop from May through September.
As you approach your destination, look for the signs to Haugane Farm Shop. They sell local specialties like fresh fruit and apple juice—perfect for a healthy lunch at the nearby recreation area.
Nearby, you will also find a gallery featuring handmade jewelry and watercolor paintings.
The tour concludes at Kalvodde, a popular public recreation area. This former farmstead has a fascinating history: its last owners were the Sannes brothers, who emigrated to the US and became prominent doctors and ambassadors for Norway in Madison, Wisconsin. Today, the area is owned by the municipality and offers perfect spots for swimming, picnicking, and enjoying the panorama of Lake Norsjø.
Bring Swimwear: There are several tempting spots for a dip in Lake Norsjø along the way.
Follow the Signs: Look for the cycle information board on the wall at Øvre Verket for route details and maps.
