About

The Cultural Trail "Hjellevannet rundt" (Around Hjellevannet) is a 5.6 km long walk – without a specific start or end point – encircling Hjellevannet lake in Skien.

Scenic Surroundings and Route Details

The Cultural Trail "Hjellevannet rundt" follows the shores of Hjellevannet in the central parts of Skien, passing through industrial and commercial areas on Klosterøya, Herkules, and Myren, along the beautiful natural environment of Bakkestranda, and over several bridges.

  • Resting Spots: There are excellent resting possibilities at Bakkestranda, where tables and benches are available.
  • Surface: The trail primarily follows paved and gravel pedestrian and cycling paths, but also includes a short stretch of forest path after the Elstrømbrua bridge. The trip is perfectly suited for cycling.
  • Parking: Parking facilities are available in Hjellen, at Bakkestranda, Myren, and the Herkules area.

History of Hjellevannet and Cultural Heritage

Hjellevannet was dammed when the Norsjø-Skien Canal was constructed. This oldest part of the Telemark Canal opened in 1861. Skien lock connects the canal with the sea and is part of the trail.

  • Hakastein Cultural Heritage Park marks the site where the oldest dated church in Norway was located. Hakastein Church was built in the early 11th century. Findings suggest that an even older church may have stood here. Traces of an ancient heathen burial ground have also been found.
  • A narrow path leads out to Galgeholmen (Gallows Islet), which served as an execution site in older times.
